President Donald Trump has announced his decision to nominate Kevin Warsh to become the next chair of the Federal Reserve, the central bank of the United States, once Jerome Powell’s term ends in May 2026.

Warsh, 55, is a former governor of the Federal Reserve, having served on its Board of Governors from 2006 to 2011 — a period that included the global financial crisis. At the time of his appointment, he became the youngest person ever to hold that role.

In announcing the nomination, Trump praised Warsh on his social media platform, describing him as exceptionally qualified and suggesting he could be among the most effective Fed chairs.

This selection comes after an extended and highly public search that considered roughly a dozen potential candidates. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent led the vetting process, narrowing the field down to a smaller group that included National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, current Fed Governor Christopher Waller, and BlackRock executive Rick Rieder before Trump settled on Warsh.

In recent years, Warsh — once known as an inflation-focused policymaker — has publicly shifted toward advocating for lower interest rates, aligning more closely with Trump’s economic priorities.

If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Warsh will become the 17th chair of the Federal Reserve, overseeing the central bank’s efforts to manage inflation, employment, and overall economic stability. His nomination intensifies ongoing debate about the Fed’s independence amid pressure from the White House to reduce borrowing costs.

Warsh currently holds positions outside government, including at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution and as a lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

The nomination now moves to the Senate for confirmation hearings, where lawmakers are expected to scrutinize his record and views, especially given recent tensions between the administration and the central bank.
