Authorities in Delaware have charged William “Bill” Stevenson, the 77-year-old ex-husband of former First Lady Jill Biden, with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, 64-year-old Linda Stevenson.
The incident dates back to December 28, 2025, when police responded to a domestic dispute call at the couple’s home in the Oak Hill neighborhood near Wilmington. Stevenson himself placed the call shortly after 11 p.m., and officers arrived to find Linda unresponsive on the living room floor. Despite attempts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Details about how she died remain undisclosed as the investigation continues. A grand jury in New Castle County handed down the indictment, accusing Stevenson of intentionally causing her death.

Stevenson was arrested at his home without resistance and arraigned soon after. He is currently held at Howard Young Correctional Institution after being unable to post $500,000 cash bail. It is not known if he has retained a lawyer yet.
Stevenson and Jill Biden were married from 1970 to 1975, a union she later described in her memoir as a youthful decision. They divorced, and she went on to marry Joe Biden in 1977. A spokesperson for the Bidens declined to comment on the charges.
Linda Stevenson was remembered fondly in her obituary as a devoted family member who loved spending time with her daughter and granddaughter, supported the Philadelphia Eagles, and built a successful bookkeeping business where she formed close bonds with clients. Friends and family highlighted her kindness, loyalty, and tenacity.
The case developed over several weeks, with New Castle County detectives leading the probe before presenting evidence to the grand jury.
